How to communicate with desktop application

I have a requirement to read data from a desktop application and update in the Accounts record.How can I do it ? Please help me to find a solution to interact with desktop application

Custom protocol handler Embed browser window within native app Browser plug-ins PHP Extensions Web service to fetch data from sugar and update in to windows application In the above points which is most suitable method to communicate with desktop applications
