Should standard search be fuzzier?

Hello everyone,
We're hearing consistent feedback from customers that standard search (ex. in list views and relate fields) should be fuzzier, ie search for the keyword in the entire target field and not only in the beginning of that field.

Example:
I am on the Account list view and I type "tools", hoping to find the account named "Best tools".
I get no result and have to input "%tools" to get it.
The behavior is the same in a relate field (ex. account for an opp).
Global search is Fuzzier and will return “Best Tools” when looking for “tools”.

I and many of the power users I've observed among my clients have started adding "%" systematically which is quite irritating.
Are you observing the same behavior? I’m certain we could customize this but that would probably require changing all searches in the application.

Wouldn’t it be great if it were a system-wide setting?

Thanks in advance for sharing your thoughts!

  • Please don't confuse the global search with the list view filters. There is a huge difference in searching for "something like" than filtering for "mostly exact results". As a Consultant and trainer it is one of the most important topics for me to explain users the difference.

In list views you are looking for a bunch of results matching the exact attributes you are setting as a filter inclduding record names. On Global Search you want to find that one entry quickly i.e. during a phone call.

    Hope that helps!

  • I am not confusing the 2 searches at all :)

I was merely pointing out that even in a "focused" used case (list views), the standard search feels too strict for many of my customers. But maybe my customers are special :)

Searching company names and contact names is tedious as most of the times users need to add the % sign in front.

Also, using global search is not always the answers especially in a relationship/relate field scenario.

Am I the only one observing this among my users?
