Hi Joli,
First of all you need to grant your access token by logging in. Here is an example api call from Developer Guide - /oauth2/token POST.
Once you get your access token, using it you can make a filter call in order to search against to specific module. This will seach/filter existing records and return the results. We have another example script from Developer Guide - /<module>/filter GET demonstrates how to filter records.
If you are new on Rest I would recommend you to visit our Developer Guide - REST section to get more informations.
I hope, these informations will help.

Thanks Tevfik,
So, can I call http://www.xyz.com/rest/v10/search?q=jsmith%40sugar.crm&max_num=2&offset=0&fields=&order_by=&favorites=0&my_items=0
for example form http://www.xyz.com/my_search.php file ?
Meaning, can I use SugarAPI in it's own environment?
