SugarCRM CE and QuickBooks Online

We currently have SugarCRM Community Edition (Version 5.5.1RC3 (Build 1197)).  (I'm aware that it's a very outdated setup but it's been working so we haven't changed anything.) Some data is exported from Sugar and QuickBooks Web Connector (2.1.0.27) is then used to import the data into QuickBooks Pro 2012 (running on a Windows server).

We would like to upgrade to QuickBooks online but when I contacted the company who had set up Sugar CRM and Web Connector for us years ago, they are no longer in business.  The company that bought them out told me that Community Edition is no longer able to be developed and that we’d have to switch to Sugar CRM Professional, pay for a migration and then monthly fees.  Is that our only option?  Is there any developer available to alter Sugar CE to “feed” into QuickBooks online rather than sending invoices via QuickBooks Web Connector on our server?

  • Hi Shelby,

Developing against Sugar CE is certainly possible, and I'm confident an integration could be developed to work with Quickbooks Online. The hurdles I think you are going to hit are:

    1. Finding a developer who wants to develop on Sugar CE - The last release of Sugar CE is a couple years ago and the unsupported by Sugar. Most Sugar developers have moved past this framework as the vast majority of customers are on Sugar 7+. There would likely be continued maintenance on this integration as the QBO service and your business needs evolve, so you also have to consider how that work would be accomplished in the future.
    2. Cost - If you find a developer to take on this project, the cost is likely to be substantial. It would likely be more cost-effective for you to purchase Sugar Pro/Ent (for on-site) or Sugar Sell (for SugarCloud) coupled with an established Quickbooks connector. FayeBSG has a mature offering for your needs: SugarCRM QuickBooks Integration | FayeBSG . The added benefit of this route is that you can get back to a supported state with your Sugar implementation. Your Sugar CE implementation, while working for you now, is also susceptible to a number of security vulnerabilities that have since been patched in later releases of Sugar. If you would like to learn more about whether purchasing commercial licenses of Sugar is a good fit for your company, feel free to reach out to me via Upsert as we are an authorized reseller of Sugar.

    Thanks!
