changing format of unique opportunity id

Is there a way to change the unique opportunity ID for all new opportunities moving forward? we wanted it to be numeric and short for our reporting.

    Hi Nikhil,

    I agree with Enrico that the best solution is probably to create your own Auto-Increment Number.  I did that, then created a field that concatenated another field and the auto-increment number to facilitate a search filter.
