Conditionally return either the first character, or first two characters of a field

Can you give it a try with the following sugar logic formula? 

ifElse(equal(subStr($field_name,0,2),"LE"),"LE",ifElse(equal(subStr($field_name,0,1),"L"),"L"," ")
)

As the string could start with any combination of letters (not just the example I originally provided), I created a nested ifElse statement to check if the 2nd character was 0,1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8 or 9.

If it is one of these numbers, the first character will be returned. Otherwise, it will return the first two characters.
