We have a requirement where files are stored on a local server share which the client wants to be able to access from a filed within CRM.

Would it be possible to have a URL (or any other field for that matter) open a file on a UNC path (\\Server2\Share\Test\Foo.txt) or (file:///Server2\Share\Test\Foo.txt)

Think I've seen it work long time ago, but I believe there was a security reason why this is not possible via modern browsers.

Why not store the files within CRM itself?

Alternatively, if the client doesn't 'trust' CRM, via a other web storage solutions (Sharepoint, Onedrive, AWS), as these would have a web accessible URL.
