When you create custom sales stage for the Opportunity (or RLI), unfortunatelly, those sales stages are not available for the tile view (and canno't be enabled from the admin section).
Is there an upgrade safe workarround ?

Not much help for you now as you have it solved, but hopefully it may help someone else who finds this post.
It reminded me of similar issues when we changed ALL the sales stages.
From a distant memory I am sure I needed to first alter the dropdown:
...to something incorrect, then Save, go out and back in, then set it back to 'Sales Stage'.
Again, it is a distant memory but I am pretty sure thats how I resolved it.
Maybe QRR too, won't hurt. As long as your users are aware before hand
