I have a autoincremented integer field in the contacts module that increments 1 for every contact created. I want to show the number on a email template when I compose an email.
I have tried inserting the field name $contact_enquiry_number_c but it does not get populated. Is it not possible is sugar CRM to populate an email with a autoincremented field ?

When are you attempting to send the email template containing the autoincrement field? If the email is sent on contact create, then the field value will be empty. This is because the autoincrement is assigned at the database-level and Sugar does not know what the value is until after the record is created.

I experienced the same behavior as you when using a standard email template. I recommend filing a case with Sugar Support to confirm the defect and track the fix for an upcoming release.
As a potential workaround, the field variable works in SugarBPM email templates in my testing. You could implement a process definition to trigger under a specific circumstance and send the desired template.
