Are there any plans to include this capability in an upcoming release? If not, has anyone been successful in replicating those functions using processes?

At this point we do not have any plans to add either reminders or recurrence for the Tasks module.
Advanced Workflow can be used to generate email reminders - no pop-ups - and will work for Tasks.
It should also be possible to simulate having a recurring series of Tasks through Advanced Workflow, although it may require some complicated logic.
Deepti Rastogi, have you seen any examples of creating recurring records through Advanced Workflow?
Riley McLeod so I guess this enhancement request http://https://web.sugarcrm.com/support/issues/55686 is not high on the priority list...
Regarding the Advanced Workflow suggestion, are you talking about creating a process that acts on all new Tasks, puts them in waiting stage until, for example, Due Date - 1 day (non-user configurable), checks the status of the Task and then sends out email to the owner if not Completed?
Another thought, wouldn´t this cause undue strain on the system since it´s keeping all Tasks running in Processes or is this Process a low overhead one?
Thanks,
KGM

Kristjan Geir Mathiesen, unfortunately, yes, Enhancement 55686 is very low on our list of priorities for the foreseeable future.
With regards to your example flow and the performance implications, I need to defer to Deepti Rastogi. She is the PM for Advanced Workflow and should know if this is the right approach.
