$bean->emailAddress->addAddress is not working, and $sea->addAddress REMOVES all other addresses

I am writing an API to change an email address on a contact.
I don't want to remove the old address, just add the new one as primary on the Contact bean.

I used the documented addAddress ( support.sugarcrm.com/.../ )

$contactBean->emailAddress->addAddress($new_email_address, true);
$contactBean->save();

$contactBean->emailAddress->addAddress($new_email_address, true);
$contactBean->save();

But this won't even add the new address to Contact at all. There are no errors in the logs, I verified that the contactBean is a valid Bean, and that the $new_email_address is a valid address. I checked the parameters for the addAddress function and I verified that the function is being called.

Adds the new address but DELETES all the others!

Has something changed in v11.0.1 (on site Professional) that I'm not aware of?

why not save the Contact bean and use the email1 field to set the primary email address. I think this way is cleaner if you want to set the primary email or even retrieve the primary email address from Accounts, Contacts or Leads

because of this:

"While this currently does work, these legacy email fields are deprecated and may be subject to removal in an upcoming Sugar release."

Agreed, email1 was deprecated quite a few versions ago and I removed it from all code back then.

FYI - According to support:

Our Advanced Support team suggested the following:

1. Find the primary email address for the contact. The dev guide shows how to do that ( https://support.sugarcrm.com/Documentation/Sugar_Developer/Sugar_Developer_Guide_11.0/Architecture/Email_Addresses/#Fetching_Email_Addresses_Using_the_SugarBean )...

$primaryEmailAddress = $bean->emailAddress->getPrimaryAddress($bean);

2. Delete that email address...

$bean->emailAddress->removeAddress($primaryEmailAddress);

3. Create it as a non-primary address...

$bean->emailAddress->addAddress($primaryEmailAddress,false);

4. Add the new address as primary...

$bean->emailAddress->addAddress($newPrimaryEmailAddress,true);

This just looks like a workaround to me, not a solution, but I thought I'd pass it on in case others are also in trouble with the documented method.
