Difference between the Sugar Outlook Plugin and Sugar Connect

Hello Sugar World!

Just looking for a high level comparison of the Sugar Outlook Plugin and Sugar Connect please?

What are the benefits? Why would a team currently using the standard connector want to move to Sugar Connect?

Looking to build a business case.

Many thanks for your help!

  • Hi Ray,

Glad to hear you're looking at Connect! There are a lot of benefits to upgrading to connect, some of which will depend on your use cases internally at your company.

    A few quick differences include:

    • You're able to access and utilize your normal Sugar instance right in your email platform in a much more robust fashion than what you can access in the Outlook Plug-in
    • More supported platforms -- Connect is supported for Office365 and Google Workspace, and can be used on both Macs and PCs
    • Connect includes a meeting scheduler, so clients can book time directly on your calendar
    • Connect uses a server-side integration whereas the plug-in is client-side

If you want to see it in action, on our Business Development team created a full video demo of how he uses Connect and all of the benefits he receives from it. This video was made a few months ago and, as Connect receives frequent updates and enhancements, there have been multiple improvements since this demo was recorded

Please make sure your organization will fulfil the prerequisites for using Connect as you learn more. In addition to the links I included above, you can also read through the solutions page about Connect on our website, as well as the corresponding and detailed overview document. I'd encourage you to reach out to your CSM here at Sugar for more in-depth details (or I'm happy to connect you if you'd like - just let me know).

    I hope this helps!

  • Hi Alex,

I have som questions that are related to this so I hope you don't mind :) I would need some help with clarifying some Sugar Connect questions from one of our customers:

They have the outlook plugin today which works fine, but now some new employees will use Mac and therefore need Connect. They have Sugar Professional, version 8.0.1. They have whitelisted the required IP addresses.

    • Can they use Sugar Connect with 8.0.1? I have found different pages on Sugar support, one that says it works for 9.0.x and under and one that says it only works for 10.x and higher.
    • Found this in the support documentation: Note: If your Sugar instance is not using SugarIdentity, you must have a unique admin user for each tenant set up in the "CRM Data Source" area of the Sugar Connect Portal. What does this mean for them?
    • Something else to be aware about regarding Connect and on-prem? I only have experience with Connect together with SugarCloud.
